Newsletter Trivia Volume 1 No. 1 - January 2009 through June 2009 |
|
| These hot six weeks are named after Sirius, the dog star.
Ancient astronomers in Mediterranean countries came up with the phrase "dog
days" for the hottest period of the summer, from about July 4 to August 11.
What was the highest summer temperature ever recorded in the United
States?
The highest temperature ever recorded in the U.S. was in California's Death
Valley. The temperature reached 134 degrees. The hottest record on Earth
took place in El Aisisa, Libya. That temp was 136F. |

CSEA Grapevine News: |
| CSEA members should not be fooled by what the governor and the media
are saying about state layoffs. The governor not only wants your raise, he
wants CSEA members to pay more for health benefits in retirement, pay more
for Medicaid Part B premiums, wants a five-day pay lag and wants to establish
a new pension tier.
The governor and the legislature recently passed a $130 billion budget that
includes $170 million in pork spending for legislators! That money would
go a long way stopping the layoffs. Lives are at risk and the governor and
legislature are playing a dangerous game. Eliminating jobs means fewer services,
fewer workers to provide care, and longer delays in state operations. Where
isn't Gov. Paterson cutting jobs? In his own office. One staff salary in
the governor's office equals four CSEA jobs. |
|
| Protecting political cronies |
| The governor also isn't laying off management/confidential employees,
and has revoked those workers' raises. In some cases, those jobs are held
by political appointees. The governor and the legislatures are protecting
their own at OUR EXPENSE.
CSEA responded angrily to the M/C exemption announcement last week. CSEA
President Danny Donohue stated in part: "What Governor Paterson is saying
is that the highest paid personnel will not be included as part of his
cost-cutting moves. He is also saying that the brunt of his reductions will
be on the lower paid employees who actually do the work of the state every
day." |
|
| CSEA Files Charge over Exam Fees |
| CSEA has filed an improper employer practice charge with the state Public
Employment Relations Board, asserting that the state violated the Taylor
Law by charging state workers fees for promotional and training exams.
CSEA contends that free access to the exams has been a long-standing economic
benefit that the state is canceling without negotiation.
The fees begin for tests announced on or after March 13, and administered
on or after May 30. CSEA expects the fees will go in effect while the union
tries to overturn them. |

| MARCH FOR MAIN STREET |
|
The March For Main Street was held on January 7th and 1,000's
of protesters participated. Participants traveled from every part of the
state to be a part of the march. The march begin in Albany's downtown Times
Union Center with a pre-march rally. From there, the protesters proceeded
up Beaver Street and into Capital Park, which is located just outside of
the Capital.
| While Governor Paterson was in side delivering his State of the
State budget, the protesters stood outside in the freezing rain holding up
signs and chanting in protest of his proposed budget cuts.
Governor Paterson is proposing among other things, to lag State employees
5 days pay and wants them to give up their 3% raise in April. CSEA has told
Governor Paterson several times that they will not reopen its state contracts. |
